Soon after coming out, Mukherjee sat in his car and drove away, only to return after some time.

While some partymen sought to play down the incident, saying it was a "domestic" matter, a party leader from the state suggested that the tiff involved another senior leader from the state as Mukherjee had reservations over the choice of a nominee for a certain seat.

Later, Mukherjee told reporters that the screening committee has cleared all the 57 candidates from West Bengal.

They included seven from the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, 16 from minorities and four women.

The screening committee meeting was attended by All-India Congress Committee general secretary Kamal Nath, Congress Working Committee member L P Shahi and AICC secretary Chandan Bagchi.

Bagchi tried to pacify Mukherjee when he made the sudden exit from the meeting.

State Congress Legislative Party leader Atish Sinha was also present at the meeting.

The committee has recommended a panel of names on seven to eight seats, while clearing name for the rest of the seats, party sources said.
