Suspended excise commissioner held in AP

Suspended Central Excise Commissioner of Visakhapatnam S P Singh was arrested by Central Bureau of Investigation sleuths and remanded to judicial custody till May 2 by a special court in connection with a graft case, agency sources said.

Singh, who went underground to avoid arrest in a corruption case, was nabbed by CBI officials, who chased his car for some distance between Vijayawada and Yelamanchali towns.

He was produced before the special court in Visakhapatnam on Friday, they said.

Special Judge G Anjaneya Reddy remanded Singh to judicial custody till May 2.

Singh was accused of demanding a bribe from a Hyderabad- based company in return for a favour in terms of reducing excise duty payable by the company, the sources said.

The excise official, who was kept under suspension, had obtained anticipatory bail from a Delhi court. The CBI officials arrested him after expiry of the bail period.
