Senior Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi was arrested along with some other party workers when they were protesting against the demolition of a cemetry wall in Malad in suburban Bombay on Thursday.
The wall was partly razed by a demolition squad of the Bombay Municipal Corporation last year leading to angry protests by Muslims. One person was killed in police firing on protestors then.
Speaking to rediff.com, Advocate Majeed Memon, senior vice-president of Samajwadi Party, said: "The Samajwadi Party is committed to fight against religious discrimination. Azmi and other party workers arrested today have refused to apply for bail."
Azmi was produced in the Borivali court later in the day and sent to the Thane jail.
