Naresh Agarwal sacked from UP ministry

Sharat Pradhan in Lucknow

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday dismissed Power Minister Naresh Agarwal from the council of ministers.

The immediate reason given was that he had violated the principle of collective responsibility laid down for the cabinet by making irresponsible statements.

Naresh Agarwal is the president of the Loktantrik Congress Party, which is a major constituent of the Bharatiya Janata Party-lead coalition government in UP.

"I have recommended his removal to the governor," Rajnath Singh said at a press conference in Lucknow.

Naresh Agarwal and the BJP high command have been informed about the development, he added.

Meanwhile, Naresh Agarwal has withdrawn support of his 20-member strong group to the ruling coalition.

However, Singh asserted that there was no danger to his government.

He said that assembly elections would be held as scheduled in March next year.

PTI adds:
Following is the party-wise break up in the 403 member UP assembly:
BJP - 158
SP - 102
BSP - 50
LCP - 20
Cong - 13
Lok Shakti - 13
JBSP - 9
Lok Dal - 8
CPM - 4
Janata Dal - 4
Samata Party - 2
CPI - 1
Samajwadi Janta Party - 1
Apna Dal - 1
RLD - 1
Rashtriya Kranti Party - 1
