BJP leader Banwarilal Kanchal quits party

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday suffered a major setback in Uttar Pradesh when former member of legislative council and general secretary of the UP Vyapar Mandal, Banwarilal Kanchal, resigned the primary membership of the party.

Announcing the decision at a press conference, Kanchal said, "Traders in the state have only faced harassment at the hands of BJP during its four-and-a-half year's rule."

"The BJP, considered a party of the traders, has done nothing for their benefit, while the traders have done a lot for it," he said.

Kanchal said his resignation had nothing to do with the dismissal of energy minister and Loktantrik Congress Party leader Naresh Agarwal.

Though Kanchal evaded a question on whether he would join the Samajwadi Party, sources close to him said his joining the SP could not be ruled out.
