Senior CPI-M leader shot dead

Unidentified assailants shot dead chairman of the Communist Party of India-Marxist-dominated Dumdum Municipal Corporation Dr Sailen Das at Dumdum on Monday, police said.

The assailants shot at Das from point blank range when he was leaving his residence at around 0940 hours (IST), Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Chayan Mukherjee said.

Das, a senior CPI-M functionary and Rabindra Sangeet exponent, was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

Following the incident, enraged CPI-M activists blocked roads in the area disrupting vehicular traffic.

Additional police reinforcements have been rushed to the spot, Mukherjee said.
