Mukhtar Ahmad In Srinagar

Hundreds of soldiers fanned all over the valley on Tuesday evening to enforce strict security on the eve of the Independence Day.

The police removed scores of Pakistani flags hoisted by separatists in various parts of the city. Three youths appeared in the city centre of Lal Chowk on Tuesday afternoon and hoisted a Pakistani flag, which was later removed, on the traffic booth. Lal Chowk was sealed on August 12 by the security forces.

The Border Security Force, Central Reserve Police Force and the state police laid a virtual siege on Srinagar where Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah will hoist the national flag and take salute at the Bakshi stadium.

All roads leading to the city have been sealed. Srinagar wore a deserted look on Tuesday afternoon, as government offices, schools, banks closed early.

Commandos took positions in and around the Bakshi stadium on Tuesday evening and all roads leading to the stadium were blocked.
