Bharat Shah denied bail -- again

By our correspondent in Bombay

For the seventh straight time, the Bombay high court today rejected an application for bail moved by diamond merchant and film financier Bharat Shah.

Justice A B Palkar did not assign any reasons while denying bail, but has called defence and prosecution lawyers to a post-lunch meeting in his chambers.

Rashesh, son of Bharat Shah, broke down in court on hearing the judge's decision. Noted film director Mahesh Bhatt was also present in court.

Prominent lawyer Kapil Sibal, arguing Bharat Shah's case, had said that his client was being unfairly targeted in the case.

Sibal produced transcripts of conversations between actor Sanjay Dutt and director Mahesh Manjrekar with gangster Chota Shakeel, and demanded to know why his client was being kept in jail while Dutt and Manjrekar were not similarly proceeded against.
