Violent ending to AP panchayat polls

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

The third and final phase of gram panchayat elections in Andhra Pradesh ended on a violent note on Monday.

Apart from the landmine blast by the outlawed People's War Group in which nine policemen and a civilian were killed in Guntur district, the police opened fire at half-a-dozen places to disperse clashing groups of political activists.

Guntur Director-General of Police H J Dora, in a statement on Monday night, said that the police opened fire at some villages in Anantapur and Prakasam districts.

In the extremist-affected Telangana region, the polling was peaceful.

In the final phase, elections were held in 7,081 gram panchayats comprising 68,419 wards in 22 rural districts.

Out of 13 million voters, about 76 per cent exercised their franchise at 70,477 polling booths. As many as 214,431 polling personnel were drafted for the last round of polls. The police deployed 165 mobile parties, 445 teams of striking force and 192 teams of special striking forces to ensure peaceful polling.
