Nine cops, civilian driver,
killed in AP blast

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

As many as 10 people -- nine policemen and a civilian driver -- were killed and two policemen critically injured in a landmine blast triggered by the outlawed People's War Group in Guntur district on Monday morning.

State police spokesman Shujath Ali told rediff.com that the dead included one sub-inspector and eight constables.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Intelligence) Anurag Sharma said the incident occurred when a police party, led by a sub-inspector of Bandlamotu police station, was on its way to Ramidicherla village in connection with the security arrangements for the gram panchayat polls.

The Guntur range deputy inspector general and Guntur district superintendent of police have rushed to the spot.
