Trinamul Congress MLAs on Monday barged into West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee's chamber at the state secretariat, Writers' Building. They staged a nine-hour sit-in and demanded to speak to the chief minister before they were evicted by the police.
The MLAs virtually laid siege to Bhattacharjee's chamber when he was away at the Communist Party of India (Marxist) headquarters to attend a state committee meeting.
Nineteen MLAs slipped into the chief minister's chamber demanding an audience with him and an assurance of adequate safety to all Trinamul activists in the state.
The police swung into action at about 9:10 pm evicting the demonstrators.
The MLAs resisted and scuffled with the police but were soon overpowered.
Trinamul MLA Paras Dutta was removed to hospital as he fell ill. The police took into custody legislator Dilip Mondal for forcibly trying to enter the secretariat when the police had already sealed all the approaches to the high-security area.
The siege came 10 days after party chief Mamata Banerjee threatened to call an agitation, including a gherao of the secretariat, to protest "deteriorating" law and order in the state and "atrocities" on her party workers.
