Flood alert sounded in five districts of Andhra Pradesh

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

The Andhra Pradesh government has sounded an alert in five districts in view of the rising water level in Godavari.

The water level in the river is expected to cross the danger mark of 53 feet in Bhadrachalam town in the early hours of Wednesday.

The district collector is camping in the town to supervise the rescue and relief operations.

The state government has rushed two helicopters to Bhadrachalam.

The government has also requisitioned helicopters from the southern command of the Indian air force at Bangalore.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who reviewed the flood situation at a high level meeting on Tuesday night, asked the district collectors of Karimnagar, Khammam, Warangal and East and West Godavari to attend to rescue and relief operations.

The Union government has also been briefed about the flood situation.

The state relief commissioner is monitoring the flood situation as well as the evacuation operations.

A control room has been opened at the state secretariat with six IAS officers on round-the-clock duty to monitor the situation.
