Prostitutes have condemned the ploy of tehelka.com of using call girls to bait army officials in their exposure on defence deals.
Reacting to media reports, the prostitutes of Delhi in a meeting on Wednesday said that prostitutes of GB road, Delhi's red light area, were not involved in the episode.
They said they were unnecessarily being defamed by the media and requested the government to stop this propaganda as 'such false allegations will hamper our business'.
"Only highly qualified and professional ladies or call girls were deployed by the tehelka people. We are illiterate and do not know how to talk to army officials and senior politicians. We are unnecessarily defamed by the print and electronic media. The government must stop this propaganda and constitute an inquiry to find out the truth and identify the girls who participated in it," the prostitutes said.
The meeting, which was presided by Bhartiya Patita Uddhar Sabha president Khairati Lal Bhola, also urged the government to look into the interest of prostitutes and refrain from unnecessarily exploiting their names.
The sex workers also pointed out that though Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had announced on August 15 that five percent of banks' profits would be utilised for the betterment of women, he did not talk about deprived classes like prostitutes, destitutes and widows.
