Three SP demonstrators
killed in police firing

Sharat Pradhan in Lucknow

Three demonstrators of the Samajwadi Party were killed and several others injured in police firing in Baleni village in Baghpat district of western Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday.

Trouble erupted in the village over a sit-in demonstration by SP activists on the Meerut-Baghpat highway. The activists were protesting police highhandedness in neighbouring Daluhera village two days earlier.

"The attempt by the local police to prevent them from staging a sit-in turned into a fierce confrontation following which the police opened fire", Principal Home Secretary Naresh Dayal told rediff.com in Lucknow on Thursday morning.

However, Dayal admitted that the situation was "mishandled by the district superintendent of police."

The SP has been given marching orders, while the in-charge of the local police station has been suspended.

SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has rushed his brother Shiv Pal Yadav and two other state leaders to Baleni.
