Samata may file criminal case against Tehelka

Samata Party is seriously considering filing a criminal case against tehelka.com in the wake of the disclosure that the web site used prostitutes to nail army officers, during the course of its investigation into corruption in defence deals, party sources said on Saturday night.

Senior party leader and former defence minister George Fernandes was on Friday night closeted with lawyers examining various legal aspects of the issue.

Fernandes was understood to be of the view that it was already getting late as far as taking action against the news portal was concerned and felt that an First Information Report could be filed by any citizen, the sources said.

Meanwhile, party spokesman Shambhu Srivastava said the government was well within its rights to take action.

"If there are some problems, let the law ministry look into them," he said and added that the party stood by its demand for immediate arrest of the 'guilty'.
