Student's rape sparks communal tension in UP town

Communal tension gripped Mahmudabad town of Uttar Pradesh's Sitapur district on Tuesday as a group of students went on the rampage setting on fire several shops protesting the rape of a school student allegedly by some members of a particular community on Monday evening.

District Magistrate B D Singh said the trouble broke out after news of the alleged rape spread. The girl is a student of the government girls inter-college.

Enraged at the incident, a group of students took out a procession in the town forcing closure of the market and schools and indulged in arson damaging several shops, he said.

All educational institutions in the town have been closed for three days as a precautionary measure.

Security personnel have been deployed in strength to maintain law and order and the situation was tense but under control, Singh said adding 10 people had been arrested so far in this connection.
