Maharashtra municipal council chiefs to be elected through direct ballot

The chairpersons of 137 municipal councils spread across Maharashtra would henceforth be elected by a direct ballot.

A decision to this effect was okayed by the state cabinet at its meeting held on Wednesday, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh told reporters in Bombay.

The tenure would be five years and a no-confidence motion cannot be pressed against the elected chairperson during the initial two years.

Subsequently, a three-fourth majority of the civic body would be needed to pass a no-confidence motion.

Currently, elected members of the municipality choose the chairperson.
