Child adoption racket: Roda Mistry released on bail

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Roda Mistry, a former Congress minister and one of the prime accused in the child adoption racket, was released on bail on Thursday by Hyderabad's ninth metropolitan magistrate, in view of her failing health.

The 74-year-old Mistry, who is the chairperson of the Indian Council of Social Welfare, had surrendered before the metropolitan magistrate on Wednesday and immediately applied for bail.

However, she was remanded to judicial custody and sent to the women's jail at Chanchalguda.

Her bail petition came up for hearing on Thursday.

The magistrate directed Mistry to furnish two sureties of Rs 25,000 each, to make herself available to the investigating agency as and when required and not to leave the country without prior permission of the court.

The Crime Investigation Department did not seek her custody as it had completed the investigation into Mistry's role in the racket.
