Over 600 convicts on hunger strike in Midnapore jail

Six hundred and fifty convicts of the Midnapore central jail continued with their hunger strike for the second day on Thursday to protest against the death of a 30-year-old life term server on Wednesday evening.

Police said Rabin Pal died in the Midnapore Sadar hospital where he was shifted following illness.

While jail warden Panchanan Biswas said that the convict died after a heart attack, a fellow prisoner, Asit Pal, claimed that he had died due to negligence by jail authorities.

Tension prevails inside the jail and a special police force has been posted in the premises to meet any untoward incident.
