32 prisoners escape from Meghalaya jail

In a major jailbreak in east Garo hills district of Meghalaya, 32 prisoners, including a hardcore Achik National Volunteer Council militant, have escaped from the William Nagar district jail, official sources said on Thursday.

The prisoners escaped after overpowering home guard personnel, who had opened the main gate for taking four undertrials to the court on Wednesday, the sources said.

The inmates also snatched away four .303 rifles from the security personnel and opened fire in the air, the sources said.

There was, however, no report of any injury or casualty.

A departmental inquiry has been ordered by the jail superintendent, the sources said.

This is the fourth jail break in the state during the current year.
