On September 11 the United States came face-to-face with the ugly visage of terrorism when two hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York and one rammed into America's power-centre, Pentagon. Close to 4000 people lost their lives in the terror attacks prompting an infuriated US to launch a massive air raid on Afghanistan in search of suspect Osama bin Laden.
