Eight JeM militants killed in south Kashmir

The army on Monday killed eight terrorists belonging to the Jaish-e-Mohammad in the Shopian area of Pulwama district in south Kashmir, a defence spokesman said.

Three Pakistani terrorists were among those killed, he said.

The army lost one jawan while an officer was injured in the operation, he added.

The army launched the operation at Durpora-Zainapora village early on Sunday following specific information about the presence of a large group of terrorists, the spokesman said.

He said the troops spotted the terrorists, who opened fire when asked to surrender, he said.

The encounter lasted till late in the night, the spokesman added.

He said the injured officer, a major, was undergoing treatment in the army base hospital.

Documents found at the scene of the encounter revealed the terrorists's affiliation with the JeM while one of the terrorists was even carrying a photograph of terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden in his purse.

In another incident, a military policeman and an unidentified militant were among three persons killed and four others wounded as troops foiled an attempt by militants to launch a suicide attack on Monday on their camp in the frontier district of Kupwara in north Kashmir.

The incident occurred at Drugmulla, some 95 km from Srinagar in Kupwara, when the military policeman intercepted a militant dressed as a commando near the transit camp around 1030 hours (IST).

The militant attempted to storm the camp by opening indiscriminate fire, but was killed, official sources said, adding five persons, including the military policeman, a jawan of a road opening party and three civilians were injured.

The injured were rushed to a hospital where the military policeman and a civilian succumbed to their injuries, he said.

Elsewhere in J&K, ten militants and two security personnel were killed and 13 others, mostly security personnel, injured as ultras engaged security forces in armed clashes, triggered two grenade blasts and torched 15 houses and some quarters of security forces, an official spokesman said.

Meanwhile, senior Hurriyat Conference leader Abdul Gani Lone lashed out at the foreign militants active in Kashmir saying their presence had distorted what was essentially an 'indigenous struggle'.

Addressing the general council of his Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference, a constituent of the Hurriyat Conference, he urged the Centre to agree for a purposeful dialogue on the Kashmir issue with the parties concerned and concede the deputed nature of the issue instead of 'turning a blind eye on stark realities'.
