Gujarat forest department chips in with wood

To meet the demand for wood to cremate a large number of people killed in the devastating earthquake, the Gujarat forest department has undertaken deforestation on a selective basis in the state.

"We have huge stockpiles of wood in different circles and all that has been diverted to the quake-hit areas," forest officials told PTI in Gandhinagar on Tuesday.

They said normally, the wood collected from the forest is auctioned, but due to sudden demand, instructions have been given to different forest circles to fell trees and bamboo on roadsides to supply them to Kutch where recovery of a large number of decomposed bodies is anticipated.

The Surat circle of the department Monday despatched 13 bamboo-laden railway wagons to Gandhidham in Kutch district, sources said.

The state government has sought more wood to be sent to the affected areas of Kutch where operations were still on to extricate bodies trapped in the rubble of collapsed buildings.
