Bhuj asks Gujarat govt for Rs 5 billion in aid

The Bhuj administration is likely to approach the Gujarat government shortly with a demand for sanction of Rs 5 billion to provide transit accommodation and establish basic civic amenities in the quake-affected areas of Kutch district, a local administration official said.

At a most conservative estimate, 150,000 houses have to be constructed at a minimum cost of Rs 15,000 each, while another Rs 1.5 billion would be required for transit facilities in the district, the official said.

He said Rs 3 billion would be required for establishing basic civic amenities in the nine towns of the district on a sustainable level.

The estimates for rural areas were being collated by the district administration, he said adding 400 villages or 50 per cent of the district had been flattened.

Even as relief is being promised by corporates and some builders in the town, providing transit accommodation, civic amenities and health on a micro-level is top priority, the official said.

The district has suffered a property damage worth at least Rs 15 billion in addition to the Rs 2 billion loss due to the collapse of government buildings.

The cost of reconstruction of these buildings will be double, he added.
