Ghisingh injured in ambush: PTI

Gorkha National Liberation Front chief Subhas Ghisingh was seriously injured when a grenade was thrown at his car, in an ambush by gunmen near Kurseong on Saturday evening, leaving three persons, including one of the attackers, dead.

The condition of Ghisingh, who had grenade splinters embedded in his head and neck, was "stable, but not out of danger", neuro surgeon Dr Moloy Chakraborty, who performed a 90-minute operation on him at Paramount Nursing Home said.

GNLF (Kurseong branch) president I N Pradhan said that it had been decided to shift Ghisingh, also chairman of the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council, to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, by a chartered flight on Sunday.

Pradhan, hinting that the breakaway Gorkha Liberation Organisation of Chattre Subba was behind the attack, demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the ambush.

The GNLF has called for an indefinite bandh from 0600 hours IST on Sunday, which will continue till the attackers were caught, Pradhan said.

Ghisingh's five-car convoy was ambushed at Satghumti, near Kurseong at 1800 hours IST on Saturday, when he was on his way back to Darjeeling from New Delhi after holding tripartite talks on the future of the council.

A grenade was hurled at Ghisingh's car, as the gunmen armed with sophisticated weapons, had a 30-minute exchange of fire with escorting security personnel and torched the pilot car of the GNLF chief, IG (Law and Order) Prasun Mukherjee said in Calcutta.

Police later found an AK-47 rifle, two magazines and a grenade from the ambush site.
