Warangal collector hurt in naxal attack

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

The Warangal district collector and two other government employees sustained bullet injuries when outlawed People's War Group naxalites opened fire at them near the Eturnagaram forest, about 180 km east of Hyderabad, on Monday evening.

A state police spokesman said that District Collector Aditya Narayan Das and two government drivers were given first-aid at the Eturnagaram hospital and later shifted to MGM Hospital at Warangal. They were stated to be out of danger.

The district collector was returning after attending a general body meeting of the local Integrated Tribal Development Agency at Eturnagaram, when the naxalites, waiting at Chinna Boinapally village, opened fire at the vehicle. Even before the attendant, sitting in the front seat of the vehicle, shouted at the naxalites, saying that it was the collector's car, some bullets pierced through the car. While the collector suffered a bullet injury in his hand, the car driver sustained a bullet injury in his leg.

The naxalites also opened fire at the jeep of the wildlife divisional forest officer that followed the collector's car. The jeep driver was injured.
