Mamata hurt in clash in Bengal: PTI

A Trinamul Congress activist was killed and 40, including Union Railway Minister and party chief Mamata Banerjee were injured, in clashes between the TC and Communist Party of India-Marxists in Midnapore district on Wednesday night, when TC workers were returning from a rally at Keshpur, police said.

Banerjee was injured in the foot when CPI-M cadres allegedly hurled stones at her when she alighted from her car at Matina, where CPI-M supporters were allegedly stoning buses carrying TC supporters home, police said.

About 40 Trinamul supporters were injured, four critically, when CPI-M men allegedly fired at buses at Keshurgeri, Moisda and Jadavbati villages after the rally.

Trinamul sources in Kolkata claimed that 450 party supporters were injured and claimed that 14 party supporters were kidnapped.

Banerjee, who was returning to Kolkata via Matina, rushed to Chhutergeria village following reports that a Trinamul supporter died in clashes which broke out in 20 villages.

Along with Calcutta Mayor Subrata Mukherjee, Trinamul policy-making body chairman Pankaj Banerjee and party parliamentarians Bikram Sarkar and Sudip Bandyopadhyay, she sat on a six-and-a-half hour dharna till a little past midnight near the Keshpur police station in protest against 'CPI-M attacks' on TC rallyists.

The troubled spots were cordoned off by reinforcements led by Inspector General of Police Jitaram Bhagat and Superintendent of Police Gaurav Dutta.
