18 Trinamul activists killed in Garbeta

Rifat Jawaid in Calcutta

Eighteen Trinamul activists were killed on Thursday night in Garbeta in West Bengal when alleged Communist Party of India-Marxist workers set fire to the house of a Trinamul supporter, the party's senior leader Pankaj Banerjee said in Calcutta on Friday.

Banerjee alleged that CPI-M activists gheraoed the house of Abdul Ghani, a Trinamul supporter, where some party workers had gathered. The house was then set on fire.

Four of the trapped persons, who tried to escape by running out of the house, were hacked to death, Banerjee said. The others were burnt alive, he added.

The Director General of Police's office in Calcutta has, so far, confirmed two deaths.

Further details are awaited.
