Rs 2-million reward on Veerappan

The Karnataka and Tamil Nadu governments have announced a Rs 2-million cash reward for any information on forest brigand Veerappan.

Pamphlets announcing the reward are being circulated in the thickly forested areas near Mysore where the bandit is believed to be holed up.

Veerappan had hit the headlines in July last year when he kidnapped Kannada superstar Dr Rajakumar and three members of his family from the actor's farmhouse on the Karanata-Tamil Nadu border.

The bandit released Dr Rajakumar after keeping him captive for over three-and-a-half months.

A cash rewards of Rs 10 lakh each have also been declared for information on Veerappan's close associates Sethukuli Govindan and Chandran.

The pamphlets say Veerappan and his associates have killed 122 people, slaughtered over 2,000 elephants and smuggled over 1,000 tonnes of sandalwood out of Satyamangalam forests.
