16 hurt in clashes in Midnapore: PTI

At least 16 people, including 10 Communist Party of India-Marxists supporters, were seriously injured in night-long clashes between the People's War Group and CPI-M activists in the troubled Midnapore district, police said.

The clashes, which were triggered off on Tuesday, when PWG activists prevented a CPI-M motorcycle rally from entering Jhapur village in Garbeta, spread to nearby Kalindichak, Jadabati and Charialia villages, the police said.

Earlier in the day, five CPI-M supporters were injured by PWG activists at Garbeta.

CPI-M activist Ranjan Ali Mullick, who received gunshot injuries in the day-long clash, succumbed at the Midnapore Sadar Hospital late on Tuesday night, the police said.

Paramilitary Eastern Frontier Rifles personnel have been deployed and a large police contingent led by Additional SP S S Panda is camping in the area.
