Surat experiences fresh tremor

Vikram Vakil in Surat

Surat experienced a mild tremor on Saturday morning, resulting in panic among residents, and many residing in multi-storeyed buildings came out in fear.

Eighteen deaths were reported in Surat after the quake hit Gujarat on Friday morning. However, the official death toll on Saturday afternoon was 35.

Twenty people are still trapped under the debris of Harikrishna Apartment at Bhattar road and rescue work is on. Rescue work is on at Pandole Estate building, on Wed Road, where 23 diamond workers died on Friday. Seventy of them were hurt when they had jumped off from the second floor in panic.

Three fire stations have been damaged in Surat. Posh localities like Athva Lines, Race Course, Bathar and Rander have also been affected and nearly 150 properties have been damaged.

In Surat, Kanhaiyabhai Patel said, "I have never faced such fear in my life. I am worried about my young children, as I am staying in multi-storeyed building. And I am afraid to step out of the house with the fear that I don't want to return and see that my building has collapsed."

Shashank Mehta said, "After the rescue work ends, I will sell my house on the tenth floor and stay in a ground floor apartment. No matter if that flat is small. Now, I feel that such tremors will recur in Gujarat and we cannot leave with such fear."

In Navsari, the multi-storeyed Virat Apartment collapsed and five children died.
