Sunday's tremor measured 6 on Richter Scale

About 257 after-shocks, following Friday's earthquake in Gujarat, have been recorded by the seismology department of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay. Of these 20 were above a magnitude of 5 on the Richter Scale, including Sunday morning's tremor which touched 6 on the Richter Scale.

Although Sunday's tremor was of the largest magnitude, slightly above 6, Dr G J Nair, head of the department told PTI it was not widely felt as one could have expected.

The epicentre of Sunday's aftershock has been reported to be north-east of Bhuj (23.7 deg north and 70.2 deg east) by the meteorological centre in Bombay.

Nair said, "One good news is that the rate of aftershock tremors are already falling down by a factor of four to five."

Initially, on January 26, after the 'big bang', the rate of aftershock tremors was 10 per hour and today it is 2 to 2.5 per hour, he said. Since the intensity is also observed to be going deeper into the earth, "It is a great relief."

However, one should take precaution before moving back to buildings, he said.
