Two US citizens among victims

An American woman and her daughter are among the thousands who died in the Gujarat earthquake, US State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said.

"We have sent condolences to their family. And, of course, we extend our condolences to all the families, victims of this terrible tragedy," Boucher said in Washington Monday.

He did not reveal the identity of the victims.

He said an eight-member team from the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance has been sent to Gujarat.

"The United States continues to coordinate closely with Indian officials to assure that assistance is most effectively provided to the victims," he added.

The US Agency for International Development has sanctioned five million dollars for relief in the quake hit areas of Gujarat.

A USAID fact-sheet estimated total assistance so far at $ 1,152,156 including commodities assistance, Prime Minister's Relief Fund and commercial airlifting to Bhuj.
