SHAR fire: TN fire tenders pressed into service

The forest fire, which broke out on Friday afternoon at SHAR centre in Sriharikota, is being controlled from spreading by pressing into service fire tenders from Tamil Nadu.

SHAR sources today told PTI that there was no threat to any installation, including the launch pad. "It is only a forest fire, triggered and fanned by strong winds," a spokesman said.

"We are trying to bring the fire under control and will probably put it out soon," a senior official said adding that the fire had spread over an area of 4 to 5 square km.

The SHAR centre at Sriharikota is spread over 64,000 acres of land in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. Satellites like GSLV and PSLV were launched from here.
