Fire at SHAR Centre extinguished totally

The forest fire, which broke out at the Sriharikota High Altitude Range (SHAR) Centre, the country's space port on Friday night, was extinguished totally, SHAR Centre Director K Narayana said on Monday.

Satellites like the Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) and Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) were launched from the SHAR Centre in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.

Narayana said none of the facilities at the Centre were affected in the fire.

"However, we are still keeping a watch over the devastated jungle in the vicinity as the weather conditions have not changed and hot winds continue to blow over the area," Narayana told PTI over phone.

"This is a recurring problem every summer," Narayana said adding, "This time it spread to a large area. But our fire wells, used exclusively to extinguish fire, had enough water to meet the emergency."
