23 killed in J&K

Six security personnel, three women and 12 militants were among 23 people killed in separate incidents in Jammu and Kashmir since Wednesday evening while more than ten were injured.

The police also apprehended an extortionist and an ultra.

Three jawans and two militants were killed in a gun battle at Hanji-Koot in Baramulla district, an official spokesman said.

A foreign militant belonging to Jaish-e-muhammad was killed in an encounter with security forces in the frontier district of Kupwara. Some arms and ammunition were recovered from his possession.

The spokesman said a jawan, a civilian and two foreign militants were killed in an encounter between Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayiba militants and security forces near Banihal in Jammu region's Doda district.

A security personnel and a civilian were injured in the clash, he said, adding the slain militants were identified as Abu Bakar and Abu Akram.

Three militants were killed in an encounter with security forces at Godhal Dhar in Doda district. Three AK rifles, seven magazines and 130 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the scene.

Two security personnel, two ultras and two women were killed in a fierce gun battle between security forces and militants near Manjkote in the border district of Rajouri on Wednesday, the spokesman said.

A woman was killed and another was wounded seriously when their house was hit by a rifle grenade fired by militants at Maisuma in the heart of Srinagar.

Police fished out body of one Lal Hussain from Suthran river in Poonch district, the spokesman said, adding the victim was kidnapped by militants on July 10.

Body of an Afghan mercenary was also fished out from a river in the same district while a Pakistani intruder was shot dead by the Border Security Force (BSF) in Samba sector.

Four civilians, including three women, were injured in an exchange of fire between security forces and militants in Zainhal area in Doda district.

Five BSF personnel were seriously injured when militants hurled a grenade near their picket at Bandipora in Baramulla district.

Police arrested an extortionist in the Mogaha Makunzer area of Baramulla district on Thursday.

A militant belonging to the Jaish-e-Muhammad was nabbed by security forces at village Meelyal in Kupwara on Wednesday.
