Ten militants were among 11 people killed in separate encounters in the past 24 hours in Kashmir, where a major tragedy was averted following the timely detection of an improvised explosive device, a police spokesman said in Srinagar on Friday.

He said six militants were killed in separate encounters with the Army and the Special Operations Group at Sindhu forest and Raitgole-Karnah in Kupwara on Thursday night.

The spokesman said four more militants were gunned down at Naikbagh in Badgam district and Ratnipora-Tangmarg in Baramulla district on Thursday night.

Two houses were damaged during the encounters.

Militants shot dead a former militant, Mohammad Ashraf Khan at Ram Nagri area of Shopian in Pulwama district late on Friday.

The spokesman said a tragedy was averted when an IED, planted by militants at the main market in Bandipora in Baramulla district, was detected and defused by experts.

Meanwhile, an official statement in Srinagar on Friday said as many as 190 people, including 108 militants, 38 securitymen and 44 civilians, were killed in stepped up violence during the first fortnight of July in Jammu and Kashmir.
