Naga rebels break ceasefire, ambush CRPF convoy

Three Central Reserve Police Force men, including an assistant commandant, were killed and two others injured in an ambush by National Socialist Council of Nagaland (I-M) militants at a remote place in Assam's North Cachar district, the police said on Monday.

The CRPF personnel were moving in a convoy of 14 vehicles when the militants attacked them near Laju, between Lumding and Haflong, on Sunday night.

Assistant commandant Binod Kumar Yadav, travelling in the first vehicle, was killed along with two constables when the rebels attacked them with incendiary explosives and phosphorous bullets.

The injured had been admitted to hospital, police said adding the vehicle was blown to pieces.

A massive search operation was launched to nab the attackers.

Meanwhile, a 24-hour general strike sponsored by the United Committee Manipur against Centre-NSCN (IM) ceasefire extention affected normal life across Manipur, official sources said.

Sources said shops, markets and business establishments remained closed while vehicular traffic came to a halt in the state.

Indefinite curfew imposed in two districts of Imphal East and Imphal West was also not relaxed in view of the intensified anti-ceasefire agitation.

Attendance in government offices was 'almost nil' while several parts of Imphal area wore a deserted look.

Army and para-military forces have stepped up security measures at all vulnerable points, reports said.
