Two infiltration bids foiled in Kashmir, 11 killed

The army foiled two attempts by heavily armed militants to sneak into Jammu and Kashmir, where 11 persons, including eight militants and two jawans, were killed since Wednesday.

An official spokesman said on Thursday that infiltration attempts were scuttled by army personnel in Tengdhar-Karnah and Machil sectors of north Kashmir when they challenged the intruders after they sneaked into Kupwara and Baramulla sectors from across the border.

The intruders opened fire at both the places, and in the resultant gun battle four militants were killed, the spokesman said, adding that a large quantity of arms and ammunition were recovered from them.

In another major encounter, the spokesman said, security forces shot dead two unidentified militants at Chak-i-Razak Khan in Mirgund area of Pattan in Baramulla district on Thursday.

A special police officer was killed and three others, including two army personnel, were injured in the shootout, he said.

The spokesman said an army jawan injured in a gunfight with militants at Hushroo in Chadoora area of Badgam district on Wednesday succumbed to his injuries later.

He said a special operations group of local police shot dead an unidentified militant during an ambush at Batapora-zakura on the outskirts of Srinagar on Wednesday night.

Security forces handed over the body of an unidentified person to police in Badgam district, official sources said.

They said a mentally retarded person was shot dead by the security forces during an operation at Devar in Lolab area of Kupwara district on Wednesday evening.

Militants attacked an army camp at Awantipora in Pulwama district of South Kashmir but there were no casualties or damage to property, an official spokesman said on Thursday.

He said a group of militants fired rockets and hurled grenades at the army camp Wednesday night and followed this up with indiscriminate firing.

The troops retaliated and the exchange of fire continued for sometime, the spokesman said.
