Protests in Srinagar over
alleged custodial killing

The police on Friday fired teargas shells and swung batons to disperse irate youths protesting the alleged custodial killing of a man in downtown Srinagar on Wednesday.

Slogan-shouting youths took to the streets in Gojwara locality near Jamia Masjid soon after Friday prayers to protest the alleged custodial killing of one Firdous Ahmad who, police said, was killed in an encounter.

They damaged a police vehicle prompting police to lob teargas shells and use lathis to scatter the protesters, the source said.

Pitched battles between police and protesters broke out and soon spread to nearby areas, they said.
