Two Kolhapur women sentenced
to death for child murders

By Our Correspondent in Bombay

Renuka Shinde and Seema Gavit, convicted of six child murders, were on Thursday afternoon sentenced to death by Kolhapur's Additional Sessions Judge G L Phadke.

The main accused Anjanabai Gavit had passed away in 1997 during the course of the trial.

Renuka and Seema are her daughters.

The trio were accused of kidnapping 12 kids and murdering nine of them between 1990 to 1996. However, only six murders could be proved in court.

Apparently, their modus operandi was to kidnap children from different places and utilise them for begging.

Another accused, Renuka's husband Kiran Shinde, turned approver in the course of the trial and was let off by the court.
