24 hurt in dacoity, clash
with police in Midnapore

Twenty-four people, including four policemen, were injured when passengers of seven buses were looted on the Lalgarh-Midnapore Road near Lalgarh and a subsequent clash between police and villagers, who put up a road blockade in protest, police said on Saturday.

The dacoits looted the passengers of Rs one lakh in cash and valuables on Friday and seriously injured 10 of them who resisted.

The passengers later put up a road blockade, along with inhabitants of neighbouring villages, and allegedly ransacked the Lalgarh police station, the police said, adding that in the ensuing clash, 10 protestors and four policemen were injured.

The police resorted to a cane-charge to control the situation and later opened two rounds of fire to disperse the mob.

Two dacoits were later arrested, the police said.
