Armed men held near Thackeray's house
were house-breakers, say cops

A Correspondent in Bombay

Three youths arrested near Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray's house in north-west Bombay in the wee hours of Monday were not terrorists from Punjab, as reported by news agencies, but plain house-breakers, the police have clarified.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone VII) Sanjay Saxena, in whose jurisdiction the area falls, told rediff.com, "Three youths were arrested in the locality while trying to break into building number 63 in MIG Colony, which is about 300-400 metres from Thackeray's residence."

"At the time of their arrest, all they had on them were ordinary house-breaking implements, and not dangerous weapons like choppers etc as some news agency had reported," Saxena said.

"They were not terrorists from Punjab either, but Marathi-speaking men from Pune and Ulhasnagar. Their names are: Surjit Singh, Gitta Singh, Pappu Singh alias Dhau Singh," he added.

The trio were arrested while breaking into the house of an advocate, one Mr Gadgil, who lives in building number 63.

The trio have been booked under Sections 454 and 511 of the Indian Penal Code (attempted house-breaking), it is learnt.

However, the incident was not without its share of drama, especially since it happened on March 12, the eighth anniversary of the Bombay serial blasts.
