The Union Cabinet on Friday decided to set up a commission of inquiry under the Commission of Inquiry Act 1952 to probe the tehelka.com expose. according to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan. Prime Minister A B Vajpayee, in his address on Doordarshan, also made the announcement.
Briefing reporters on the deliberations of the Union Cabinet meeting on Friday evening, Mahajan said the inquiry would look into the allegations made in the video tapes and transcripts released by tehelka.com under the codename of Operation West End.
The proposed commission of inquiry, according to Mahajan, will be a single-member commission and will consist of a sitting or a retired judge, preferably sitting, of the Supreme Court.
The judge will be appointed after consultations with the Chief Justice of India.
The commission will be asked to submit its report within four months of notification.
