The Communist Party of India-Marxist Saturday dismissed the prime minister's address to the nation as "self-adulation and diversionary tactics" and said the intent of ordering a probe by a sitting or retired Supreme Court judge was nothing but an "eyewash".
In a statement, the Party politbureau also said the prime minister's appeal for a debate in Parliament was unacceptable given the government's "obstinate stance and determination to defend the culprits."
It said the Vajpayee government was trying to "buy time" and using "delaying tactics" to bail itself out of the crisis.
"Having lost credibility and the moral authority to govern the country, the Vajpayee government must quit. Nothing less is acceptable to the people of the country," it said.
"It is deplorable that in his bid to defend the indefensible, Vajpayee adopts an offensive approach and accuses the opposition of indulging in tactics aimed at destabilising the country," it said.
The party said the NDA had "prejudged" the inquiry by retaining George Fernandes as its convenor and promising to reinstate him after the probe was over. "This clearly conveys that the inquiry will be a mere eyewash."
