Mandela donates Gandhi prize
money to quake victims

Gandhi Peace Prize 2000 winner Nelson Mandela has donated $106,698 he received as prize money to the earthquake victims in the Kutch district of Gujarat.

The former South African president has given the prize money cheque to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund, the Nelson Mandela Foundation said on Monday.

Mandela, who received the prize jointly with the Bangladesh Grameen Bank on March 16, wanted the money to be ''specifically used for assistance to the community of Gujarat in Kutch'', it said.

The award was conferred on the statesman and architect of an apartheid-free South Africa by President K R Narayanan.
