CBI files FIR against Sonia's secretary

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The anti-corruption unit of the Central Bureau of Investigation has filed a first information report against Vincent George, private secretary to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, for allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

"The FIR was filed by the CBI in the court of R L Chugh yesterday [Tuesday] and investigations in the case are now in full swing," S M Khan, CBI spokesman, told rediff.com

Chugh had recently replaced Ajit Bharihoke as the special judge for CBI cases.

Khan denied that the timing of the action had anything to do with the tehelka.com tapes scandal.

"The preliminary inquiry was going on since March last year, when Abhishek Verma, son of Veena Verma, a member of Parliament, told the CBI during interrogations that Vincent George and ex-Enforcement Directorate officer Ashok Aggarwal were involved with him in some deals," he said.

The investigation is being supervised by CBI Joint Director Neeraj Kumar, assisted by Superintendent of Police Sunderi Nanda.

According to the CBI, George owns properties worth several millions in Delhi and elsewhere in the country. He also has fixed deposits and cash deposits amounting to more than Rs 15 million in various banks.

The CBI says George owns a two-and-a-half-storeyed house in the posh Anand Niketan area of south Delhi and a commercial first floor in Defence Colony, also in south Delhi.

Besides, he has two shops in the World Trade Centre in Connaught Place, a five-acre plot in Nebh Sarai near the Qutub Minar, a flat in a housing society in Vasant Kunj and agricultural land in Madras and Bangalore. "Further investigations are on," Khan said.

But another CBI officer ruled out George's arrest for now.
