About 70 per cent polling in Kerala

Approximately 70 per cent polling was reported in Kerala where eight people were injured in poll-related clashes on Thursday.

According to initial reports received at the state Election Commission in Trivandrum, about 70 per cent of the 21.6 million voters in Kerala exercised their franchise in the polling which ended at 4 pm.

Eight people, seven among them United Democratic Front workers and another Left Democratic Front activist, were injured in poll-related clashes in different districts, police said.

Two persons, an LDF worker and a UDF activist, were injured in clashes at Kunjikode of Kottarakkara constituency in Kollam district, police said. An Indian Union Muslim League worker was injured at Kuttiyadi in Meppayyur constituency in Kozhikode district and another at Wandoor in Malappuram district.

Four UDF workers were injured in Kannur district, two each in Peravoor and Azhikode constituencies.

Police chased away a group of people who gathered before a booth at Koothuparamba in Kannur district defying prohibitory orders.

According to police, in most cases the disputes were over omission of names in the electoral rolls despite their having photo identity cards.

Voting was briefly delayed in some places where the EVMs developed snags.
