About 30 per cent voting in TN

An estimated 30 per cent of the 47.5 million voters in Tamil Nadu had exercised their franchise till 1300 hours in all the constituencies in the state and the polling was peaceful with no untoward incident.

However, sporadic incidents of road blockades in Madurai city and minor verbal clashes were reported from Dindigul district, according to district officials.

Polling in all the 234 constituencies was brisk from the morning, thanks to the use of Electronic Voting Machines, for the first time throughout the state. People, by and large, expressed happiness that these machines were easy to handle.

Visits by PTI correspondents to some booths in the city saw long queues of voters.

Among the first to vote in the city were Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, All India Annn Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam supremo Jayalalitha, Madras Mayor and Karunanidhi's son, M K Stalin, actor, Rajnikanth, MGR Kazhagam leader and former AIADMK minister, R M Veerappan and Tamil Maanila Congress leader, G K Moopanar and Dravidar Kazhagam general aecretary, K Veeramani, and Communist Party of India-Marxist secretary, N Sankariah.

Voters in some places complained that they were not allowed to vote as they found their names deleted in the voters' list, despite their having photo identity cards.

A total of 1857 candidates, including 104 women, are in the fray for the assembly polls in the state.
