Polling begins under tight
security in West Bengal

Polling began at 0700 hrs in West Bengal on Thursday under unprecedented security to elect 294 members for the 13th state assembly.

At stake are the electoral fortunes of 1,676 candidates, including 107 women. A keen tussle between the ruling Left Front and the opposition Trinamul-Congress combine is in the offing.

Polling is also being held for the by-election in Midnapore Lok Sabha seat which fell vacant following the death of former Union home minister Indrajit Gupta.

The ruling Left Front is contesting all 294 seats in the state, with the CPI-M alone contesting in 211 constituencies.

Trinamul Congress has 226 candidates and its alliance partner Congress 60. The BJP is contesting in 266 seats.
